Bringing Home the Dough

The Regional Safety & Environmental Director  will lead, support and audit bakery teams to drive improvements in environmental safety and sustainability (ESS) processes and culture. Constantly interact with bakeries, provide training, perform site audits, and implement ESS management systems and other initiatives.

 

Rising to the Challenge: Position Responsibilities

• Serve as the first point of contact for bakeries in a specified region. Respond to all questions and concerns related to environmental, safety and sustainability activities.

• Serve as the subject matter expert for the region. Engage bakery teams and provide information on local, federal and state rules, regulations and enforcement trends (e.g. OSHA, EPA).

• Manage and direct the investigation of serious injuries, significant near misses, permit violations and exceedances, and other safety or environmental events.

• Perform ESS assessments at least annually at regional bakery locations and record findings in Benchmark. Identify any concerns and assist plant with corrective actions. Audits should include an evaluation of the ESS Management System.

• Ensure that each regional bakery utilizes the ESS Software tools (i.e. Benchmark) and that all compliance tasks are maintained in the system. Provide training and guidance on tools as needed.

• Complete onboarding activities for new ESS Managers following a defined process (i.e. checklist) and schedule.

• Develop, coach, and mentor bakery ESS Managers to empower them with the knowledge and tools to be successful in their role. Must be able to engage bakery teams in a manner that fosters trust and open dialogue.

• Review bakery scorecards and KPIs to evaluate site trends and identify areas for improvement.

• Identify high priority safety risks, analyze, and report key safety performance indicators, develop and implement risk mitigation strategies, monitoring their effectiveness and adjusting them appropriately.

• Collaborate across departments keeping related parties updated (e.g. Supply Chain VPs). Work with other leaders to foster workplace safety and environmental compliance (including permits, licensing, and sustainability) in alignment with company policies and applicable regulations.

• Manage potential violations or issues proactively. Support bakery compliance activities through effective communication and review of regulatory requirements with the local team. Develop and help bakeries implement corrective and preventative action plans when self -reporting, notice of non-compliance or JHA indicates potential risk. Review formal compliance correspondence for bakery response to minor non-compliance issues.

• Coordinate with corporate sustainability, engineering and other involved parties on projects that may impact environmental or safety compliance (i.e. new oven, oxidizer, machine guarding, dock locks). Requirements may include obtaining permits, development of compliance or safety plans, additional testing, or updates to ESS programs. 

• Interface, advise and negotiate with local, state, and federal agencies, corporate and private consultants, legal counsel, facility management and all levels of the organization on environmental issues. Keep the Sr. Dir of Environmental Compliance and other team members informed.

• Organize and lead in-person regional ESS meetings and/or training sessions to expand bakery teams’ development and understanding. Verify required training is completed for assigned bakeries.

 Provide input and support the development of policies, standards and procedures to ensure consistent and effective approaches to managing safety and environmental risks. Participate in new process reviews, including job hazard analysis and training.

Support sustainability team with initiatives and continuous improvement at bakeries.

• Provide direct environmental, safety and sustainability support to assigned bakeries and facilitate completion of ESS Manager tasks during periods of time when the ESS Manager Role is unfilled. (e.g. leave of absence and vacancies).

Knead to Know: Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading change in a manufacturing facility
  • At least three years of field experience managing safety, environmental and sustainability programs at the facility level.

Additional Ingredients: Essential Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental or Safety Science, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Travel up to 50% via air or automobile
  • Overnight travel, may be required to meet business needs
